What works for older people?

In June 2018 Advice NI launched evaluation reports on two of their rights-based digital inclusion projects for older people - Supporting Active Engagement, backed by Big Lottery Fund over six years; and Building Resilience in Retirement, supported by the Money Advice Service for one year.

More than 100 people - including project participants - attended the launch to hear a keynote address by the Commissioner for Older People, Eddie Lynch, and a presentation from CENI Deputy Director, Nicola McIldoon.

Nicola, who carried out both evaluations, said:

‘These reports very clearly show ‘what works’ when supporting older people to use technology to improve their wellbeing.

Between them, SAE and BRIR helped more than 700 older people across Northern Ireland to overcome their fear of technology and develop the knowledge and confidence needed to access the vast array of rights-based and financial resources available online.

There has been good learning about what motivates older people to engage in projects like this and what issues are most relevant to them.  We also found that how the training is delivered is as important as what is delivered for this target group.

Both reports demonstrate how the projects align with current policy themes around digital transformation of government services, financial capability and information poverty.  They should provide a strong platform for Advice NI to position and develop its work in this field in the future’.

The reports are the culmination of CENI’s work with Advice NI over the last 4 years.  During that time, we worked closely with staff from both projects to gather the statistics and feedback needed to help us learn more about the contribution their work made to the lives of older people.

Advice NI is sharing the reports in order to add to the knowledge base of what works and so benefit the wider sector.
